Anesthesia
The Anesthesia section of the Clinical Proficiency Exam evaluates a candidate’s ability to safely induce, maintain, and monitor anesthesia in veterinary patients.


Anesthetic Preparation & Drug Administration

Selecting appropriate anesthetic agents based on patient condition

Proper dosing and administration of premedications, induction agents, and maintenance anesthetics

IV catheter placement and fluid therapy management
Anesthetic Monitoring &
Equipment Use

Setting up and checking anesthesia machines (oxygen flow, vaporizer, breathing circuits)

Monitoring vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, temperature, oxygenation)

Recognizing and addressing anesthetic complications (hypotension, hypoventilation, etc.)
Recovery &
Post-Anesthetic Care

Safe extubation and monitoring for airway complications

Assessing pain and providing analgesia

Monitoring for post-anesthetic complications (hypothermia, delayed recovery)
