The Small Animal Training section of the CPE evaluates a candidate’s ability to handle, examine, and perform essential clinical procedures on dogs and cats.


Safe Handling
& Restraint

Proper approach and handling techniques for both dogs and cats

Using muzzles, towels, and other restraint methods

Recognizing stress signals and adjusting handling accordingly
Physical Examination & Basic Diagnostics

Assessing vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, capillary refill time)

Auscultation of the heart and lungs

Palpation of the abdomen, lymph nodes, and joints

Hydration assessment (skin tenting, mucous membranes)
Common Clinical
Procedures

Administering oral, subcutaneous (SQ), intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) medications

Venipuncture (cephalic, jugular, or saphenous veins) for blood collection

Performing a basic neurological exam
